Inflatable Steel Method Creates Pavilion

Polish architect and designer Oskar Zieta’s latest project—the NAWA pavilion, part of Poland’s European Capital of Culture celebration—was recently unveiled.

In the FiDU procoess, first the metal is cut, forming a 2-D template. Then, the edges are welded together. Finally, compressed air is pumped through the object, inflating it to 3-D.

The structure is made up entirely of steel—approximately 52 tons—and employs FiDU technology, a process invented by Zieta in which metal is inflated.

The pavilion is the first project of this size to be entirely made of FiDU technology, giving it the term “a manifesto of FiDU.”

In the FiDU procoess, first the metal is cut, forming a 2-D template. Then, the edges are welded together. Finally, compressed air is pumped through the object, inflating it to 3-D.

The pavilion is the first project of this size to be entirely made of FiDU technology, giving it the term “a manifesto of FiDU.”

For NAWA, 714 elements were cut out of the steel, which later made 35 arches. The pieces were created and inflated in the production hall of a shipyard.

“This choice was determined by the size of the sculpture which required an unusually large production hall and also easy access to the Odra river,” according to Zieta in a press release. “Thanks to that we could save time during the installation on the Daliowa Island. The long hours of hard work paid off when we saw the final effect.”

The pieces were eventually carried on three barges to the site where the structure was erected. Altogether the process took about 700 hours with the involvement of 23 people.
