The Federal Aviation Administration air traffic control center in Leesburg, Virginia, was evacuated Monday night (July 10) after fumes caused by roofing work traveled into the building’s air-conditioning system.

The resulting odor in the control room led to an evacuation of more than 50 people and the delay of hundreds of flights as the center monitors three major airports in the region.

The Federal Aviation Administration air traffic control center in Leesburg, Virginia, was evacuated Monday night (July 10) after fumes caused by roofing work traveled into the building’s air-conditioning system.

The report of fumes and subsequent evacuation took place around 6 p.m., officials said, and after the Loudoun County fire department ventilated and inspected the area, the building was turned back over to the FAA around 9 p.m.

They fumes were reportedly from an adhesive and had a general odor causing mild irritation to the eyes and throat.

Assistant Chief Matthew Tobia of Loudoun County Fire and Rescue said that the crew “found nothing that would cause any health effects.”

However, one person was taken to Inova Hospital as a precaution.

The FAA has not responded to a request for more information as of Wednesday afternoon (July 12).

What is that picture of?

In Santa Fe NM, several years ago, a competent roofer anticipated, ahead of time, the need to modify a hospital's ventilation-air intakes to avoid successfully an easily anticipated problem of noxious adhesive fumes entering the building. What happened in Virginia? Lack of understanding of the potential problem? And, BTW, the attached image appears to be blatantly inaccurate and inflammatory (Pun unintended.)

Product selection / specification is also part of the issue.
