Around 1,300 people interested in being a part of building the new $1.9 billion, 65,000-seat domed football stadium in Las Vegas showed up to the project’s kickoff meeting earlier this month.

The project, set to house the National Football League’s current Oakland Raiders, is slated to be completed in time for the 2020 NFL season, leaving about a 30-month window for construction.

The project, set to house the National Football League’s current Oakland Raiders, is slated to be completed in time for the 2020 NFL season, leaving about a 30-month window for construction.

Representatives for co-contractors Minneapolis-based Mortenson Construction and Henderson’s McCartey Building Cos. talked project and bidding details to the standing-room-only crowd.

Construction and Design

More plans were unveiled than what had already been released to the public, including some design changes and specifications to the timeline.

Construction is set to begin in November to move in equipment and begin excavation work. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, 26 feet will need to be excavated for the stadium’s lower bowl and crews will used four cranes on the construction as the walls and stands are erected.

Architect David Manica most notably confirmed that the roof will be rigid, but the field surface will be retractable so that its natural grass can grow outdoors and be wheeled in for games.

However, much of the design isn’t finalized, which Mortenson principal John Wood acknowledged when he spoke on the “fast track” time frame.

“We don’t really view it as being an aggressive timeline,” Wood said. “We’ve got a lot of confidence in the schedule for construction. The challenge is, the design is in its early stages, so the real critical aspect to the project is getting sufficient design completed before construction starts.”

Bids

Bids will be sought in packages, based on when the materials or services will be needed. The first package—one of six—will be for structural steel and precast, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, elevators, escalators, heating and air conditioning controls and the stadium’s transparent ETFE roof.

The requests open July 3 and prospective bidders are expected to return their proposals by the end of the month.
