DoD Figures to Keynote Corrosion Conference

The U.S. Department of Defense’s Corrosion Policy and Oversight Office will look to strengthen ties with other nations’ military and academic corrosion specialists at its 2017 DoD-Allied Nations Technical Corrosion Conference, to be held Aug. 7-10 in Birmingham, Alabama.

The DoD-Allied Nations Technical Corrosion Conference will include technical sessions, free trainings and keynote addresses by experts on military corrosion-control priorities and methods.

The Conference, administered by SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings, will include technical sessions, free trainings and keynote addresses by experts on military corrosion-control priorities and methods. Early-bird registration continues through June 30.

Keynote Speakers

James MacStravic, who is performing the duties of Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, will deliver the keynote address at the conference, speaking on the importance of international cooperation in combating corrosion in military applications.

Corrosion Office Chief Engineer Richard Kinzie will deliver a keynote luncheon talk on biases in government and public-sector decisionmakers, and how the corrosion-control community has improved its approach to these decisionmakers.

Trainings taking place Sunday, Aug. 6, before the official start of the conference, include Fundamentals of Coatings, a look at different types of coatings and how they work against corrosion. The training will include information on surface preparation and application.

Technical session topics include:

  • Accelerated Weathering Testing;
  • Paints and Coatings: Primers;
  • Paints and Coatings: Systems;
  • Corrosion Policy; and
  • Surface Preparation & Pretreatments.

A Thursday workshop will include invited speakers from the U.S. Coast Guard and the navies of the U.K., Chile, Germany and Australia.

Dunmire, director of the DoD Corrosion Policy and Oversight Office.
