An international engine manufacturer recently announced its latest sizable investment, a new marine paint shop.

In a move to go green, Rolls-Royce Power Systems (Friedrichshafen, Germany) has invested 17 million Euros ($19 million) in a new marine paint shop for MTU Friedrichshafen, a commercial internal combustion engine manufacturer owned by the company.

The new paint shop, which is at the MTU Plant 2 in Friedrichshafen, is for large engines and entire genset and traction systems. The company says the new plant will make painting operations more efficient and environmentally friendly by: reducing throughput times by 20 percent; using aqueous paint to help reduce emissions; cleaning engines and components without using solvents and allowing for the reuse of washing and flushing water.

MTU engines are to be painted in the new plant. These include Series 8000 units, which are the biggest in MTU’s portfolio and have an output of 10,000 kilowatts.

Andreas Schell, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, said in a press release that the investment will enable the company to live up to both personal quality expectations and customer demand. “It is also a commitment to Friedrichshafen as a company location in which we will be continuing to produce a large proportion of our engines,” Schell said.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems reported that the new plant also has major ergonomic and occupational health and safety benefits, as well as increased capacity for efficiency, which involves improved accessibility and ease of use.

MTU engines are to be painted in the new plant. These include Series 8000 units—the biggest in MTU’s portfolio—which have an output of 10,000 kilowatts. The units are most often used to propel military and government vessels, as well as ferries and yachts.
