Durability + Design is set to launch its inaugural Material Selection Conference, a one-day seminar on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at the Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh International Airport in Pittsburgh. There are just weeks left to receive the early-bird registration rate for this event.

Efflorescence exuding from a pinhole in an exterior coating indicates the presence of moisture within the wall. WUFI software can be used to evaluate moisture conditions in building envelopes.

The conference program will be divided into two sessions, featuring panel discussions and presentations. The first class of the first session, “Introduction to WUFI Software,” will be conducted by Andre O. Desjarlais, program manager for the Building Envelope Systems Research Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

About the Class

WUFI is described as a menu-driven computer program which allows realistic calculation of the transient coupled one-dimensional heat and moisture transport in multi-layer building components exposed to natural weather. It is based on the newest findings regarding vapor diffusion and liquid transport in building materials and has been validated by detailed comparison with measurements obtained in the laboratory and on outdoor testing fields.

“Hygrothermal modeling using WUFI increases the model user’s capabilities of understanding and predicting how their building envelope component will perform under the highly transient conditions it will be exposed to in real life,” Desjarlais explains.

“The opening presentation on WUFI will cover basic building envelope moisture design principles and how WUFI Pro uses heat and mass transfer fundamentals along with the necessary input data to predict hygrothermal performance and make mold growth predictions,” he adds. “Validation of the hygrothermal simulation tool will also be covered.”

In addition to seeing a demonstration of the software using a typical North American building component as an example, course attendees will learn:

  • How to perform transient heat and moisture calculations;
  • What boundary conditions need to be specified;
  • Key material properties that govern heat and mass transport; and
  • How to translate the software output to practical results.

Early-bird registration for D+D’s Material Selection Conference ends July 14. For more information, visit durabilityanddesign.com/materials.
