Coatings manufacturer PPG Industries (Pittsburgh) announced last week that it will unveil a new sprayable secondary fuel vapor barrier for aircraft at the upcoming International Paris Air Show.

According to PPG, the new product, which is set to be available commercially next year, uses ultraviolet curing, cutting its cure time to seconds, in comparison with more traditional products, with cure times of up to a day or more.

PPG will introduce a new coating for aircraft at the upcoming International Paris Air Show.

A secondary fuel vapor barrier is applied to the center wing box fuel tanks of transport aircraft, PPG explains, and is an elastomeric coating providing an extra layer of protection to prevent fuel or vapors from leaking into the cargo bay. Fuel vapors escaping into areas with electrical equipment pose a risk of explosion.

Cure Time Solution

Traditional secondary fuel vapor barriers are two-part polyurethanes that take at least 24 hours to cure, PPG says. The new, sprayable coating uses PPG’s Permapol polymer, already in use in other adhesives and sealants the company offers. Its quick cure is intended to speed up production by eliminating lag time.

Bill Keller, PPG global market segment manager for aerospace sealants, says the development was driven by demand from manufacturers and subcontractors. “I have met with aircraft manufacturers from around the world who said having a rapid-curing, easy-to-use product was an absolute priority,” Keller said.

Coatings at the Air Show

The Paris Air Show runs June 19-25 and includes an exhibit floor that features suppliers of materials, coatings and other aerospace industry goods and services.

Other new coatings-related products being introduced at the show this year include:
