Google Unveils New Plans For London HQ

Google recently unveiled construction plans for its future London headquarters, and it promises to follow the company’s well-established tradition of unique HQs.

Known as the “landscraper,” Google’s prospective future London HQ would sprawl at a hefty length of 1,082 feet, with 11 stories and a roof covered in wildflowers and other plant life. Sloping gardens would crown the structure, which is to be built of concrete and glass. The top level of the building will also include a track for “walking meetings,” which seems as innovative an idea as the rest of the structure’s design.

The perks for Google employees do not stop there, however. The design also includes an 82-foot long swimming pool, a wellness center, basketball court and lookout platform. Inside, there will be three concrete floors with timber floors staggered between, which results in single- to triple-height workspaces. On the ground floor, retail spaces will be able to cater to people coming from King’s Cross railway station.

$1.73 Billion Price Tag

Currently, plans have the building sprawling out at 305,000 square feet, two thirds of which will be occupied by Google employees. As it stands, the building will cost $1.73 billion to construct. Google hired Bjarke Ingels Group and Heatherwick Studios—both high-profile architecture firms—to design the building.

Bjarke Ingels, founder of Bjarke Ingels Group, said the design for the new Google HQ draws from local character. The design also takes “advantage of the contextually defined building envelope while creating continuously cascading work environments that will connect Googlers across multiple floors.” In 2013, Google announced headquarters were to be built in London, but the original plans were rejected by company co-founder Larry Page for being “too boring.”

While Google’s plans for its future HQ seem to be exciting for both employer and employees alike, the plans must still pass Camden council in order for construction to begin next year.
