In a move designed to make it—as AkzoNobel puts it—“more agile” in responding to local customer needs and regional market demands, the Dutch firm has opened a Performance Coatings facility in Brazil.

AkzoNobel's production plant in Brazil will manufacture and supply products from the Dutch firm's International line of industrial, marine and yacht coatings.

The facility is an expansion of an existing site in Santo Andre, Sao Paulo, and strengthens the Amsterdam-based coatings manufacturer’s 90-year business ties with Brazil. The production plant will manufacture and supply products from AkzoNobel’s International line of industrial, marine and yacht coatings.

Added Presence

AkzoNobel said the new facility will help strengthen the company’s international market position in South America.

"Our innovation expertise plays a key role in driving organic growth, and this new facility highlights our continued focus on adapting to market needs in order to better serve our customers with essential color and protection,” Jelena Arsic Van Os, director of AkzoNobel Performance Coatings in South America, said in a press release. "The investment will add further momentum to the instrumental role International is playing in helping AkzoNobel to strategically diversify its markets and expand its presence throughout South America.”

Productivity Increased

AkzoNobel said the Santo Andre expansion will increase production capacity for its products between 35 and 50 percent—depending on the size of the batch—and a new distribution center will boost shipping capacity by 50 percent. The firm added that by increasing its level of automation, control of the production process and the quality of products will be enhanced.

"AkzoNobel stands out for having excellent products and services and an extraordinary customer base in this region of key importance for the company," said Pablo Ribeiro, business manager for Marine and Protective Coatings in South America. "It certainly makes the difference in such a competitive market."
