An Ohio-based protective coatings company recently made its way onto a list of “promising young” startup companies compiled by a national business network.

Tesla Nanocoatings (Massillon, Ohio) was named to CNBC’s “Upstart 25” list, the network’s first-ever collection of startups that it says are on the way to becoming “tomorrow’s household names.”

About the Coatings

Tesla, originally founded in 2007 by Todd Hawkins and not fully incorporated until 2012, produces Teslan Carbon Nanocoating, a two-coat epoxy system engineered with carbon nanotubes for durability and flexibility. The Teslan line includes primers formulated with zinc, aluminum and magnesium, as well as a polyurethane topcoat.

Tesla Nanocoatings produces Teslan Carbon Nanocoating, a two-coat epoxy system engineered with carbon nanotubes for durability and flexibility.

Tesla (which is not affiliated with Tesla Motors) says the carbon-nanotube coatings, designed for use on marine structures, bridges, oil and gas facilities and other steel and metal substrates, are “stronger than diamond” due to the way the nanotubes arrange themselves in ropelike formations. Teslan “applies like paint, but acts like plating,” the company says. They were developed in conjunction with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center.

The coatings, the company says, provide barrier and cathodic protection to steel substrates, and if the coating is somehow scratched or damaged, its galvanic properties will be activated.

An additional advantage touted by the company is the coating system’s two-coat nature; eliminating the traditional intermediate coat has the potential to be a time- and cost-saver.

In 2011, Teslan was honored as part of the R&D 100, a list compiled annually by R&D Magazine. The product garnered Tesla Nanocoatings a NorTech Innovation Award, and in 2013, the firm struck a multimillion-dollar funding deal with Seoul, South Korea-based chemical company SK Global Chemical, which Tesla says uses Teslan to protect its facilities.

Massillon-based IndeOnline reports that Tesla is anticipating expanding in the near future.
