SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings is accepting nominations for its 2017-18 Structure Awards, honoring excellence in protective coatings projects.

The Structure Awards are handed out annually at the SSPC Conference featuring Greencoat, which takes place next January in New Orleans. SSPC is looking for nominations for all types of structures: bridges, tanks, concrete structures, and industrial or commercial facilities.

The Eads Bridge recoating project, performed by Thomas Industrial Coatings, won the George Campbell Award (Industrial) at SSPC 2017.

In addition to being honored at the awards luncheon on the first day of SSPC 2018, Structure Awards winners will be featured in a photo essay in JPCL next year.

To be eligible (unless otherwise noted), a project must have been completed between July 1, 2016, and June 30, 2017. Nominations will be accepted through Aug. 30.

A representative of the structure owner must attend the awards luncheon at SSPC 2018, and must grant permission for information to be published with the JPCL essay in order to be eligible as well.

The Awards

The awards to be handed out are:

  • Crone Knoy Award, for outstanding achievement in commercial or industrial coatings work that demonstrates innovation, durability or utility. The qualities that may represent outstanding achievement in this area include excellence in craftsmanship or execution of work, and use of state-of-the-art techniques or products to creatively solve problems or provide long-term service.
  • Charles G. Munger Award, for the outstanding industrial or commercial coatings project demonstrating longevity of the original coating. The structure may have had spot repairs or overcoating with the original coating still intact. (This project does not need to have been completed in 2016-17.)
  • William Johnson Award, for outstanding achievement demonstrating aesthetic merit in industrial or commercial coatings work. The qualities that are considered for aesthetic merit include color, gloss or texture, or that the coating on the structure compliments the environment while enhancing the structure itself. The coating may represent a theme, an object or a specific graphic design.
  • George Campbell Award, for outstanding achievement in the completion of a difficult or complex industrial or commercial coatings project. The qualities that may represent achievement in a difficult or complex structure may include work occurring in harsh or extreme environmental conditions; work completed under strict time constraints; work done with limited access or in high traffic areas; work on a structure with complex structural components; or a project that requires coordination with multiple trades or sub-contractors.
  • Erik S. Kline Award, for outstanding achievement in industrial coatings work performed in a fixed shop facility. The project can be repair work or new construction.
  • Military Coatings Project Award of Excellence, in recognition of exceptional coatings work performed on U.S. military ships, structures or facilities.
  • SSPC Coatings Industry Spirit Award, for recognition of a coatings project that demonstrates extraordinary service benefiting a community or the industry.

The July 2016-June 2017 timeline does not necessarily apply to the military and industry spirit awards.
