With only weeks left to submit an entry for Durability + Design’s inaugural Elevation Awards, we will be counting down to the deadline (May 26) by featuring a select nomination each day, giving you a glimpse of the competition. Below is a selected nominee in the “Commercial Exteriors” category.

Project: Gilded Statue

The Gilders’ Studio Inc. and ThemeWorks fabrication firm created a nearly 40-foot tall statue to greet guests at the MGM Cotai Hotel and Casino in Macau, China. The 38-ton lion likeness was constructed out of glassfibre reinforced concrete and clad entirely in 23.75 karat gold leaf. The statue is the largest gold lion in China.

The studio prepped for months, developing a permeable priming and gilding system that would work for the substrate and environment in Macau. Six Studio gilders ended up spending one week priming and three weeks gilding the sculpture using 3,000 square feet of thick gold leaf, produced in Italy.

Gold was applied to every surface of the statute, which required the steel and bamboo scaffolding to be reconfigured multiple times for accessibility.

The gilding work also took place in the middle of an active construction site. Despite the enclosure, wind, rain and dust were a constant factor and care was taken to protect the integrity of the gilding system.
