A new academic center at Imperial College London will focus on corrosion—a big problem that the Shell-Imperial Advanced Interfacial Materials Science Centre hopes to take on at the smallest level.

The AIMS, under the direction of Mary Ryan, of Imperial’s Department of Materials, will look at how large-scale materials are affected by nanoscale processes, with a goal of better understanding corrosion. It is a joint effort with Shell’s Materials and Corrosion R&D team, the university notes.

The Shell-Imperial Advanced Interfacial Materials Science Centre, at Imperial College London, hopes to take corrosion on at the nanoscale.

A team that includes six Ph.D. students and three post-docs will use new systems for spectroscopy and microscopy to develop ways of studying nanoscale systems “over length and at timescales relevant to industrial processes,” the university says.

Academy and Industry

“The Centre is founded on the strong relationship between Imperial and Shell,” Ryan says. “And a great advantage of our program is the ability to work closely with our technical colleagues within Shell, exchanging knowledge and gaining real insights into operational materials challenges.”

“The design of sophisticated next-generation, anti-corrosion protocols and accurate lifetime predictions is exceptionally challenging and requires a dedicated multi-disciplinary approach to provide the holistic understanding, which will ultimately lead to greatly enhanced engineering performance and real-world impact,” notes Shell’s Lene Hviid, general manager, materials and corrosion.

The new center had its official launch in March.
