May is “Building Safety Month,” and the International Code Council is encouraging industry professionals to join its 57,000 members in the public awareness campaign.

“The campaign reinforces the need for adoption of modern, model building codes, a strong and efficient system of code enforcement and a well-trained, professional workforce to maintain the system,” according to an ICC press release.

May is “Building Safety Month,” and the International Code Council is encouraging industry professionals to join its 57,000 members in the public awareness campaign.

The theme for 2017 is, “Code Officials—Partners in Community Safety and Economic Growth,” with the following focuses each week:

  • May 1-7 - Mentoring the Next Generation of Building Professionals;
  • May 8-14 - Building Design Solutions for All Ages;
  • May 15-21 - Manage the Damage – Preparing for Natural Disasters; and
  • May 22-28 - Investing in Technology for Safety, Energy & Water Efficiency.

Some local chapters, such as the Southern Nevada International Code Council, are promoting the month-long global event in a way that directly benefits homeowners—in addition to educating them—by using May as a month of amnesty for homeowners who disclose projects that they’ve completed without obtaining the proper permits.

The Las Vegas Sun noted that there just isn’t enough common knowledge on what needs a permit, what doesn’t and what certain codes are. SNICC member Alicia Chen, told the publication that she thinks people take safety codes for granted.

“That’s generally the biggest issue—the perception,” she said. “People should look at building codes and permits as a tool to help them build things safely, instead of as a hurdle to get through. They are trying to help you, not antagonize you and slow down your project.”

The ICC has provided tool kits and materials for each week as well as resources for local sponsors to get their respective communities involved, including these tips:

  • Promote BSM through chapter activities,
  • Set up an information booth at city hall or a local hardware store,
  • Visit a school and give a presentation about building safety,
  • Post local information online, and
  • Send a news release to newspapers and radio and television stations.
