Polymer Firm, UN Team Up for Environmental Contest

German polymer company Covestro (Leverkeusen) and the United Nations Environment Program announced Monday (April 24) that they have teamed up to launch the “Young Champions of the Earth” sustainability competition.

Six entrants ages 18 to 30 will each receive $15,000 in seed funding, which will allow them to showcase innovative projects geared toward improving the health of the planet.

The application period, which opened Saturday, ends on June 18.

Polymer company Covestro and the United Nations Environment Program announced that they have teamed up to launch a sustainability competition for persons ages 18 to 30.

"We are delighted to support UN Environment on this excellent initiative,” says Covestro CEO Patrick Thomas. "Sustainable thinking and acting is critical in preserving our planet and improving the safety and quality of millions of people.

“Covestro seeks to contribute to this goal with products and technologies that benefit society and reduce the impact on the environment. This is the basis of our vision‘To make the world a brighter place’and Young Champions invites the enthusiastic participation of all who care for our future."

Picking Winners

Each year, winning entrantsone from each of UN Environment’s global regionswill be selected as “Young Champions of the Earth.” Along with the seed funding, each will undergo intensive training and mentoring to help bring their environmental ideas to life.

"As I’ve seen time and again, when young people are given opportunities and support, they can be powerful catalysts for change,” UN Environment Executive Director Erik Solheim said. “It is our hope that this initiative will inspire thousands of young people around the world to develop innovative ways to tackle the environmental issues that matter to them."

Thomas and Solheim will be among members of a global jury who select the winners, who will be invited to attend the "Champions of the Earth" Gala Dinner in Nairobi in December.
