A collapsed concrete wall at an El Cajon, California, work site has killed one construction worker and left another injured.

The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. on Monday (April 3) while Southland Paving Inc. crew members were working in an area slated for a Mercedes Dealership, according to reports. A spokesperson for the paving business did not return a request for comment on Tuesday afternoon (April 4).

Emergency officials say that the two men were digging footings in a 30-inch trench next to the 6-foot-high wall when it collapsed.

The 20-foot-long section of concrete fell into the trench, trapping one man and injuring the other. The second man, identified by sources only as a 21-year-old crew member, was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital and suffered injuries to his back and leg that were described as not life-threatening.

The Heartland Fire and Rescue team worked for an hour and a half to free the 51-year-old man under what was estimated to be about 5,000 to 6,000 pounds of concrete. By 1:45 p.m., however, the rescue effort ended and a recovery mission began, according to rescue officials.

The identity of the victim had not been released by Tuesday afternoon.

Neighbors noted to NBC 7 San Diego that crews had been working along the residential area for three and a half months and have had to frequently stop construction due to heavy rains.

California’s Occupational Safety and Health Association is investigating the incident. Details of the investigation were not immediately available.

The value of pre-work risk assessments cannot be overemphasized.
