NACE Honors Corrosion Pros

This year’s NACE International Corrosion 2017 Conference and Expo, held March 26-30 in New Orleans saw a number of corrosion-control and coatings professionals honored for their contributions, both to NACE and to the field of corrosion control in general.

Individual Honors

John H. Fitzgerald III, FNACE, was honored with the R.A. Brannon Award, recognizing a NACE member for their contributions to the association over the years. Fitzgerald served as NACE president in 1990-91, was part of the first class of NACE Fellows, and served as technical editor of Materials Performance magazine from 2000 through 2015. Fitzgerald, retired from Corrpro, is known as an expert in cathodic protection.

NACE's Corrosion 2017 Conference and Expo included honors for a number of corrosion and coatings-industry professionals.

The A.B. Campbell Award, recognizing the best paper by an individual under the age of 35 in Materials Performance or CORROSION in the past year, went to Zachary Cano, for his paper, “Physical Characterization of Cathodically-Activated Corrosion Filaments on Magnesium Alloy AZ31B.” Cano is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo, in Ontario.

John “Jack” Tinnea was honored with the T.J. Hull Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to NACE in the field of publications. Tinnea, of Tinnea & Associates, has served as an officer on NACE’s Publications Activities Committee.

The F.N. Speller award, for significant contributions in the field of corrosion engineering, went to Narasi Sridhar, FNACE. Sridhar, of DNV GL, in Dublin, Ohio, has made contributions to the field via his research on corrosion processes in relation to life prediction and risk assessment. He is also an adjunct professor at The Ohio State University.

Research and Education

The H.H. Uhlig Award, honoring an outstanding educator in the field of corrosion, was awarded to Brian J. Connolly, of the University of Manchester, in the U.K. He has served with the NACE Great Britain Section board of trustees, and has awarded 47 scholarships to students in the U.K. so that they could present their research at the NACE Corrosion Conference over the years.

The W.R. Whitney Award, for research in the field of corrosion, went to Paul M. Natishan, FNACE, of the Naval Research Laboratory. Natishan has done research for more than 30 years, adding to the body of knowledge regarding corrosion and its prevention. He has seven patents and has published more than 100 research papers.

The NACE Foundation Founders Award was given to Neil G. Thompson, FNACE. Thompson is a NACE Fellow and has served as both president of NACE (2005-06) and president of the NACE Foundation (2008-15). He is on the NACE Nominating Committee and serves with the Governance Committee as well.

Organizations Honored

Three organizations were honored with the Distinguished Organization Award at this year’s conference. They are: Exova, a lab testing group; Corrosion and Protection Center USTB, the largest corrosion research center in China; and the Corrosion and Technology Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

New NACE Fellows

Nine new NACE Fellows were also named:

  • Jenny Been, of Irisndt-Engineering, Calgary, Alberta;
  • Gareth Hinds, of the National Physical Laboratory, in Middlesex, U.K.;
  • Brian Kinsella, of Curtin University, Perth, Austrailia;
  • Vivekanand Kain, of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, India;
  • Minxu Liu, of the University of Science and Technology Beijing, in China; 
  • Daniel Powell, retired from Williams, in Tulsa, Oklahoma;
  • Kenneth Tator, of KTA-Tator, in Pittsburgh;
  • Pierre Roberge, of Royal Military College of Canada, Kingston, Ontario; and
  • Lietai Yang, of Corr Instruments LLC, San Antonio.
