Building a Mars Settlement

Colonizing the Red Planet is going to take a lot of MacGyvers, according to the experts.

Building and maintaining structures and systems will not be easy, and early colonists will not be able to rely on resupply shipments. Construction materials, water and oxygen on Mars will depend on inventive use of local sources.

Those were a few of the ideas discussed during a panel recently held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School, reports. The topic, “Sustainable Expansion: Reaching Mars and Beyond,” involved conversations about colonizing Mars with some intent and specificity, as the race to colonize the planet heats up.

One of the first "selfies" on Mars was taken by the Mars Rover Curiosity. NASA announced Tuesday (March 21) that two of the raised treads on one of Curiosity's wheels had broke.

One of the panel participants said he is working on revamping a kind of building material popular during the Roman Empire, called welded tuff. The group also discussed "molten regolith electrolysis," which reportedly involves using electrical energy to break down soil into its basic minerals in a single step, to release oxygen—for breathable air.

While many of the techniques may sound out of this world, the group says the ability to think quickly and creativity using on-hand resources will be key to survival.

"When you're talking about trying to survive on the surface of Mars, the level of skills that you need are so much broader," Mark Jernigan of NASA told

Not a waste of money when we are killing this planet and all of its life forms! If you were one of the future generations with no food, heat, shelter, etc...LOOK at the big picture!
