NACE International’s Corrosion 2017 Conference and Expo will have more than just technical sessions and workshops in New Orleans; there will also be plenty of opportunities to network, exercise, see the sights and help others. Here’s a rundown of extracurriculars at the conference.

New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity

Conference-goers have the opportunity to work with the NACECares team, which will be partnering with the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity to provide families a chance to attain home ownership.

Volunteer Day – 10 a.m., Saturday, March 25 – New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity

Conference-goers have the opportunity to work with the NACECares team, which will be partnering with the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity to provide families a chance to attain home ownership.  No experience is necessary, but volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes and articles of clothing that are OK to get dirty. The job needs 100 volunteers and, as of Tuesday (March 21), there are still 68 slots available. More information here.

22nd Annual NACE Race – 8 a.m., Sunday, March 26 – Crescent Park

This year’s 5K will be held at Crescent Park, which is a 20-acre park that pays homage to the industrial history of the New Orleans wharves, featuring the rusted steel Piety Steel Bridge. There will be a celebration (complete with beverages and snack) and an awards ceremony after the race. Registrations are accepted now through the day of the race and the entry fee is $20. All proceeds benefit the NACE International Foundation to help inspire the future workforce to engage in the prevention of corrosion through science, engineering and technology. Darrel D. Byerley Memorial Golf Tournament – 8:30 a.m., Sunday, March 26 - TPC Louisiana

Consistently ranked as one of Golfweek’s “Best Courses You Can Play,” the 72-par TPC Louisiana will host the NACE International Foundation Darrel D. Byerley Memorial Golf Tournament to kick off the conference weekend. The course sits on 250 acres of wetlands along the Mississippi River delta and was the home of the PGA’s Zurich Classic. SBP Levee Tour – Sunday, March 26

For those who want to take a gander outside for their education at the conference, Corrosion 2017 is offering a guided look at one of the greatest engineering challenges: the SBP Levee Tour. There will be two guided stops—the Bayou Bienvenue and the site of the levee breaches on the Industrial Canal (during Hurricane Katrina). Discussion topics will focus on environmental impacts, lessons learned and a roundup of locations, including the aforementioned, the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway and others. Admission to the tour is $10 and can be purchased during registration. More information here.

13th Annual Silent Auction - Monday, March 27 through Wednesday, March 29 - NACE Exhibit Hall

NACE invites attendees to take a break from the action and peruse the items and collectibles available at the silent auction. Items will be on display during expo hours through 4 p.m. March 29. Proceeds will benefit the NACE Foundation. More information: here.

Rust-fighting – All conference long – Social Media

The most nefarious of supervillains, Dr. Rusty Von Rust, is reportedly planning to infiltrate Corrosion 2017. “Von Rust’s whereabouts are currently unknown, although intelligence sources are predicting that the mad scientist will make his way to New Orleans in late March, to gather information on the latest developments from corrosion prevention experts, whom he considers his foes,” according to NACE. Officials are asking all conference attendees to capture and report sighting of Rusty Von Rust via social media accounts using #IFoundRusty. Attendees who participate will be entered into a drawing to win a $100 gift card. The drawing will take place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29. The winner will be announced on social media.
