South West Metal Finishing (Exeter, U.K.), part of the EIC Group, has introduced a new chemical immersion treatment for components made using the additive manufacturing process, or 3-D printing, to improve the finish of the parts.

SWMF’s Almbrite process chemically removes foreign object debris from the surface of the component, the company says, while smoothing and brightening the surface. It can be used for internal or external components of aerospace, automotive, medical and other products.

The Almbrite process is meant to aid in the manufacture of 3-D printed components for aerospace and other industries.

SWMF notes that additive manufacturing is on the rise in many industries, and says that clients reported trouble with the surfaces of AM products. This led to the three-year project of developing the Almbrite process.

The process is especially useful in the aerospace industry, the company says, where AM products must stand up to stringent testing in order to be put into use.

“Everything had to be tried and tested and then tested again,” explained SWMF researcher James Bradbury. “Now the processes are considered safe enough they must make sure the finish of these components [fulfills] the necessary requirements.”
