A new standard addressing the process of corrosion prevention and control planning is the result of a collaborative effort between the United States Department of Defense, SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings and NACE International.

The new standard, SSPC-CPC 1/NACE SP21412-2016 Corrosion Prevention and Control Planning, was developed by a joint task force consisting of representatives of the DOD Corrosion Office, SSPC and NACE. It serves as a guide to navigating the elements and requirements of CPC planning.

The new joint standard serves as a guide to navigating the elements and requirements of corrosion prevention and control planning.

The standard, according to SSPC, defines the key elements/composition of CPC planning for all public- and private-sector users, as well as product suppliers and facility owners and managers. Intended for use by federal agencies, it can be applied to other government entities and private industry, SSPC notes.

“The new CPC planning standard offers a more practical and reliable method to influence DOD’s acquisition and sustainment programs, and it will benefit all stakeholders,” said Rich Hays, deputy director of the DOD Corrosion Office.

Standard Content

The standard defines the key elements and composition of what corrosion prevention and control planning encompasses for the design, manufacturing, construction, operation and sustainability of products and facilities.

According to SSPC, the standard includes aspects of CPC planning such as considerations for material selection and design to minimize corrosion, and factors that might come up during CPC planning in relation to fabrication and construction, operation and use, and maintenance and sustainability.

The standard contains checklists of items to be considered during CPC planning.

The SSPC committee involved in the creation of the new joint standard was SSPC C.4.11, Corrosion Prevention and Control Planning, chaired by Paul Chang, of LMI.

How to Acquire

SSPC-CPC 1/NACE SP21412-206 is available for free download for SSPC members, via the SSPC Marketplace. It can be purchased by non-members for $25 via the same website. Members can also access the standard via the SSPC mobile app, available through the App Store or Google Play.
