Firm Develops ‘Modular’ Wastewater System

A Dutch company has put its new system of modular tanks for wastewater treatment into real-world use for the first time, and is experimenting with constructing the units with self-healing concrete.

Verdygo, a private offshoot of the Waterschapbedrijf Limburg, which is the public wastewater agency in the province of Limburg, developed the system. The Verdygo system, presented as flexible, easy to install and easy to move, is now in operation in Simpelveld and Roermond, where new plants opened in December.

Verdygo worked with construction firm Strukton, engineering firm Royal HakoningDHV, and Aan de Stegge, a wastewater construction firm, in installing the system. In lieu of conventional, permanent tanks for wastewater treatment, the new system uses above-ground tanks that can be moved or reconfigured if necessary.

'Easy to Move'

The idea, the company says, is to create a plant that can be easily modified if trends, usage or regulations call for it.

“This creates an enormous capacity for innovation, as we can respond flexibly to climate change, the latest advances in treatment technology and changing market demand,” Waterschapbedrijf Limburg chairman Ger Driessen says.

Testing Self-Healing Concrete

The company says it’s working on a number of variations on the system, made from different materials. One, on which Verdygo is collaborating with Delft Technical University, will test the viability of self-healing concrete in the system. Tanks have also been made from stainless steel, coated steel and wood.

According to Water & Wastewater International, the investment for the two plants came to 10.7 million euros ($11.3 million).
