SSPC Honors Industry Service

During the annual Awards Luncheon program, SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings not only recognizes the best coatings projects completed over the previous year, but also takes the opportunity to honor those outstanding individuals whose careers reflect decades of service to the industry.

Benjamin Fultz of Bechtel stressed the importance of standards development while accepting the SSPC Honorary Life Member Award.

In addition to the individual awards that follow, The SSPC Midwest Chapter received the Outstanding North American Chapter Award. This year’s Outstanding International Chapter Award was given to The SSPC Saudi Arabia Chapter during the event held Monday (Jan. 30).

Honorary Life Member Award

The SSPC Honorary Life Member is a title bestowed upon an individual by the Board of Governors for extraordinary long-term activity on behalf of SSPC. This year’s recipient is Ben Fultz, Bechtel Corporation.

A corrosion and coatings specialist who has done work worldwide, including assisting with passive fire protection at Chernobyl, Fultz stressed in his acceptance speech the importance of standards development and the role SSPC played in the steel industry at the time of its founding, and in the coatings industry since.

John D. Keane Award of Merit

Named for SSPC’s executive director from 1957 to 1984, this award acknowledges outstanding leadership and significant contribution to the development of the protective coatings industry and to SSPC. The 2017 recipient is Bob Murphy, The Sherwin-Williams Company.

Bob Murphy of The Sherwin-Williams Company accepted the John D. Keane Award of Merit.

Murphy, an expert in coatings and linings for applications including wastewater and pulp and paper mills, was honored for his active contributions to SSPC and his role in organizations including the American Water Works Assocation and National Rural Water Association.

Women in Coatings Impact Award

SSPC’s Women in Coatings Impact Award was established at SSPC 2014 to recognize women in the coatings industry whose contributions have created a positive impact on the culture of the industry.

This year’s winner is Margaret Pardy of MAG Consulting Inc. Pardy, of Calgary, Alberta, founded her own coating inspection firm in 2013 after years working at NWS Inspection Inc., with founder Doug Wade. In introducing Pardy, Michael O'Donoghue noted her reputation for excellence and her role as a mentor for younger women in the coatings industry.

Coatings Education Award

This award is given for significant development and dissemination of educational material and technical information relating to protective coatings and their application. This year’s recipient is Finishing Trades Institute (FTI).

Headquartered in Maryland and associated with the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, FTI provides education and apprenticeship programs for individuals interested in careers in painting, coating and lining application, glazing and related fields.

Technical Achievement Award

This award, recognizing outstanding service, leadership and contribution to the SSPC technical committees, was presented to Steve Spadafora of Leidos. Spadafora was introduced by Derrick Castle, chair of the SSPC Standards Review Committee, who noted Spadafora's integral role in recent standard development.

SSPC Past President Award

The SSPC Past President Award was presented to Skip Vernon, president and owner of Coating & Lining Technologies Inc. Vernon was the first person to be named an SSPC Master Coatings Inspector, in 2009, and served as SSPC president in 2015-16.
