As the construction industry prepares for new respirable crystalline silica rules to take effect in June, the federal agency in charge of enforcement is offering some guidance.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recently released a compliance guide for small businesses to help them understand and follow the rule.

The new guide helps business owners to determine whether the rule applies to them, and what measures they must take to protect workers, as well as keep proper records.

Last year, OSHA approved the new regulation on respirable silica dust—which can cause silicosis and lung cancer, and can be a hazard in abrasive blasting and some concrete work.

The agency reduced the permissible exposure limit for the material to 50 micrograms per cubic meter, averaged over an eight-hour shift.

The new guide for construction helps business owners to determine whether the rule applies to them, and what measures they must take to protect workers, as well as keep proper records.

The new guide is available as a PDF for free here.

Additional Guide to Come

There are three different versions of the new rule: one for construction, one for maritime and one for general industry. The construction rule is enforceable June 23.

The maritime rule takes effect in 2018, and a separate guide will be available at a later date for that rule.
