Spilled Paint Leads to Road Repaving

You probably know the saying about crying over spilled milk, but it was spilled white paint—more than 3,000 gallons of it—that caused some headaches, if not tears, on one U.K. road last weekend.

A collision between a car and a truck carrying 12,000 liters (about 3,170 gallons) white paint made for quite a scene on the M6060 motorway in West Yorkshire late Friday (Jan. 13); paint covered the roadway, stuck to passing cars and eventually made its way into the nearby River Spen, which some said “ran white.”

The paint was held in 12 large rectangular containers on the back of the truck when the accident occurred, sending the containers spilling out all over the roadway. Police closed the highway while cleanup efforts ensued, with care taken to keep the paint from infiltrating the environment any more than it already had.

Environmental Worries

According to The Sun, environmental officials said the situation was being monitored, and that the Environment Agency was assisting Highways England with the cleanup effort; there was no risk to people or wildlife from the spill, they reported.

Highways England reported on Saturday (Jan. 14) that a portion of the southbound road would require resurfacing, which was carried out quickly. The road reopened just after 5:00 p.m. Saturday.
