A worker at a specialty coatings plant in Indiana was killed Wednesday (Dec. 14) after falling into a paint tank, according to reports.

WFIE 14 News reported that 67-year-old Joseph Ward, of Newburgh, IN, died after falling into the tank at Red Spot Paint and Varnish, in Evansville, which manufactures coatings for the automotive and consumer goods markets.

According to local reports, Ward was a 40-year employee who was set to retire next month.

WEVV 44 News reports that grief counselors were brought in for employees, and production workers were told not to report to work on Thursday.

The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating, as are local authorities; details of what led to the fall are not clear. According to local reports, the county coroner’s office has called it an accident.

An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday (Dec. 15), and toxicology reports are expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

'Always Made People Smile'

A Red Spot spokesperson told WEVV 44 News Ward was a “close friend, co-worker and huge part of the Red Spot family for 41 years,” and that “he always made people smile and could fix anything.” The spokesperson said the company is focused on helping Ward’s family at this time.

Red Spot, part of the Fujikura Kasei Global Network, is headquartered in Evansville, IN, and has facilities in Michigan, Ontario and Nueva Leon, Mexico, according to its website. The company makes coatings for automotive interior and exteriors, as well as for heavy equipment, containers and other consumer goods, sports equipment and other applications. Red Spot specializes in coatings for plastics.

Red Spot was founded in 1903, making paints for architectural and vehicle applications, and shifted its main focus to plastic coatings in the 1930s. Fujikura Kasei became Red Spot’s parent company in 2008.
