Innovation in the coatings industry was celebrated by the British Coatings Federation during its seventh-annual awards dinner last month.

“We’ve seen again that the coatings industry continues to deliver outstanding performance across all categories,” BCF Chief Executive Tom Bowtell said in an announcement

“It’s great to see another record year in terms of entries and attendance at the dinner, and it’s a welcome break from all the uncertainties around Brexit to take time out and celebrate the industry’s success,” he added.

The British Coatings Federation handed out six awards recognizing success in the coatings industry during its annual awards dinner held Nov. 24 in Manchester, U.K.

The awards were presented Nov. 24 by BCF’s President, Vincent O’Sullivan of PPG Architectural Coatings.

And the Winners Are…

This year’s winners rose to the top among 31 shortlisted entries from 25 different manufacturers.

Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings took home the BCF Sustainable Innovation Award for its Dura-Plate 301W product. Dura-Plate 301W is a solvent-free coating that reportedly eliminates the need for grit blasting and allows application in cold and damp conditions, reducing painting downtime by up to 70 percent.

Now in its sixth year, the Sustainable Innovation Award recognizes, rewards and promotes coatings innovations that have the greatest impact on the sustainability of the supply chains in which the coatings industry’s products, processes and services play a role.

AkzoNobel’s Dulux Academy walked away with the third-annual BCF Excellence in Training Award, presented for company initiative. Dulux Academy reportedly impressed the judges with its innovative approach to raising standards within the painting and decorating profession, as well as its proactive response to the need to attract new talent and “upskill” the existing workforce.

The Student of the Year Award, which recognizes individual initiative, went to Pronto Industrial Paints’ apprentice, James Skliarsky. This award is presented to the student who, in the opinion of the tutors of the Coatings Training Institute, has consistently demonstrated the highest level of understanding and achieved outstanding scores in examinations and practical work when completing their training modules.

The most long-standing award, the Coatings Care Overall Best Performer Award went to Farrow & Ball in Wimborne. This award is presented to a company that has demonstrated best-in-class performance across a range of 45 environmental and safety key performance indicators, including accident and incidents, energy consumption, waste and recycling, VOC emissions, personnel management, and communications.

The Sherwin-Williams UK Coatings site in Knottingley received the Coatings Care Progress Award, which goes to a company that has made the most significant year-on-year improvement in its performance on health, safety and environmental criteria. Here, judging is based on the Coatings Care Indicators of Performance and BCF accident and incident surveys.

Crown Paints was selected as winner of the BCF Customer Service Award. Crown was said to have raised the voice of the customer across the whole business and in to the boardroom, creating real business benefits, including an improved bottom line. Now in its second year, the Customer Service Award recognizes the growing importance of customer service as a differentiator in the paints, coatings, inks and wallcoverings industries.

A list of the awards finalists and certificates handed out that night is available here.

The British Coatings Federation is the sole trade association representing the United Kingdom’s paints, printing inks, powder coatings and wallcoverings manufacturers.
