A new elastomeric polyurethane from AkzoNobel (Amsterdam, Netherlands) is designed to protect both steel and concrete in service environments, updating a product already offered in the U.S. and expanding its reach into Asian markets.

Polibrid 705E is an odorless, zero-VOC, two-component polyurethane that the company recommends for use in potable water, wastewater and some chemical applications. It is an update to the Polibrid 705 product, which had previously been available in the U.S. The product is complemented by a Polibrid 670S concrete primer as well.

Addressing Corrosion

Used as a lining, the product is compatible with wastewater and other environments where H2S and microbiologically induced corrosion are concerns, the manufacturer says. It can also be used in mining and mineral applications, secondary containment and other industrial applications.

Polibrid application

Polibrid 705E is an odorless, zero-VOC, two-component polyurethane that the manufacturer recommends for use in potable water, wastewater and some chemical applications.

The company recommends applying Polibrid 705E via heated, plural component airless spray. Because the product is 100 percent solids and VOC-free, the potential for pinholes due to solvent evaporation is eliminated, AkzoNobel says. Polibrid 705E comes in a buff color.

Application to Concrete

The coating, according to the manufacturer, creates an elastic membrane that is capable of withstanding shrinkage cracks in concrete. The company notes that when applying to concrete substrates, the use of a geotextile fabric under the coating should always be considered, to create reinforced, bonded geomembrane linings.

AkzoNobel’s International brand of marine and protective coatings entered into an agreement to distribute Polibrid coatings worldwide in 2012. The new Polibrid 705E and 670S offerings are the first new products in the line since that time.
