Liquid and powder coatings manufacturer Axalta Coating Systems (Philadelphia) has introduced a new one-component, self-bonding electrical steel varnish.

According to the company, Voltatex 1175W-1K was developed to offer longer shelf life and improved, user-friendly handling with the same technical performance as standard two-component systems.

Coatings with self-bonding characteristics are in high demand, particularly for the production of wind-turbine generators, electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles, according to Axalta.

“An effective self-bonding one-component varnish requires a highly sensitive and well-controlled crosslinking system to ensure that the coating’s application, drying and hardening all work well,” says Frank-Rainer Boehm, global technology manager for Axalta’s Energy Solutions business.

This has long been difficult to achieve, he adds, saying, “Traditionally, it has taken advanced two-component waterborne formulations to deliver the required self-bonding performance—until now.”

Self-bonding characteristics have become increasingly important in the production of high-quality magnetic cores for stators and rotors, the company explains. Such products offer important manufacturing benefits, it adds, such as precise and reproducible adhesion and ensuring the varnish is not squeezed out of bonded stacks.

Self-bonding properties are therefore in high demand, it says, particularly for the production of wind-turbine generators, as well as in the manufacture of motors for electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs).

Voltatex 1175W-1K is supplied in 200-liter (about 52.8-gallon) drums or 1,000-liter (about 264-gallon) containers. It must be mixed with the Voltatex 1075K catalyst in a varnish-to-catalyst weight ratio of 90:10, the company notes, and offers a pot life of one week at room temperature.
