Known as a science and technology company in healthcare, life science and performance materials, Merck KGaA has entered a cooperation agreement with coating specialist durXtreme GmbH.

Under the arrangement, durXtreme of Ulm, Germany, will immediately take over Merck’s European business with polysilazane-based coating formulations marketed under the tutoProm surface coatings brand, the chemical company announced Monday (Oct. 17).

The move will allow Merck, based in Darmstadt, Germany, to focus on its core competencies in material production, and not on coating manufacturing, according to Michael Weiden, head of Functional Materials within Merck’s Performance Materials business sector.

Coating specialist durXtreme GmbH will immediately take over Merck’s European business with polysilazane-based coating formulations marketed under the tutoProm surface coatings brand, according to the chemical company.

DurXtreme is described as an established formulation expert and specialist in customized high-performance coatings based on Merck polysilazanes and their applications.

"We are delighted to have found a highly qualified partner for our customers and are certain that durXtreme will expand the business further," he added.

Experienced Partner

Merck added the tutoProm product range to its portfolio through the 2014 acquisition of AZ Electronic Materials. The product line has been marketed by durXtreme since that time.

TutoProm is said to be a transparent coating system that imparts an ultra-thin, glass-like finish and lasting soiling protection to smooth, non-suction surfaces. It is used in the interiors and on the exteriors of public transport for graffiti protection, as well as to protect building facades, ship hulls, classic cars, and artworks in public spaces from “negative environmental influences,” Merck noted.

According to the rights agreement, durXtreme is receiving an exclusive five-year license covering manufacturing, commercialization and brand usage rights in Europe for the polysilazane-containing Merck products tutoProm bright, tutoProm matt HD, CAG 37 and CL 1068.

Additionally, durXtreme will gain access to manufacturing know-how and take over Merck’s existing customer base for polysilazane-containing finished formulations.

TutoProm products are reportedly used on the exteriors and interiors of public transport vehicles for graffiti protection, as well as on building facades, ship hulls, classic cars, and artworks in public spaces.

At the same time, commercialization of the polysilazane binder Durazane will be transferred back to Merck, the company said. These products are used in the production of high-performance coatings for surface protection and have been marketed by durXtreme since 2014.

Complementary Portfolio

TutoProm reportedly serves as the ideal complement to durXtreme’s existing portfolio, which offers a broad range of products specifically developed for ultra-thin yet highly durable surface coatings in industrial applications.

Matthias F. Koseck, managing director of DurXtreme, said, "With our knowledge and our practical experience, we are in a position to continue to provide Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, customers with the best service and support for all our products."

About durXtreme

DurXtreme describes itself as a specialist for high-quality, long-lasting, innovative and functional coating solutions based on polysilazanes.

The company was founded by Dr. Titus J. Rinke, Dr. Christian Koch and Matthias F. Koseck specifically for the commercialization and further development of polysilazane high-performance coatings. It offers not only finished formulations for industry and commerce but also customized solutions for nearly every application.

In 2014, durXtreme became an official marketing partner of AZ Electronic Materials GmbH and today the company supports more than 500 contacts in the polysilazanes field.
