SSPC Releases Publication Updates

Two publications—a standard for latex exterior coatings and a guide for lighting in industrial coating operations—have been updated under the direction of SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings.

SSPC-Paint 24

SSPC-Paint 24, “Latex Exterior Finish Coat for Steel Surfaces, Performance-Based” is intended for use by owners, specifiers and coating manufacturers, the association says.

Written by the its Waterborne Acrylic Coatings Committee (C.1.4.A), the standard provides performance benchmarks and minimum acceptance criteria for a latex exterior topcoat to be used in normally dry or frequently wet (but not immersion) service environments.

SSPC-Paint 24 provides performance benchmarks and minimum acceptance criteria for a latex exterior topcoat to be used in normally dry or frequently wet service environments.

The revision broadens the scope of the standard to allow use either as a topcoat over a compatible primer or as a direct-to-metal (DTM) coating applied in multiple coats or over compatible primer. It also extends exposures to include exposure in Environmental Zones 2A (frequently wet by fresh water) and 2B (frequently wet by salt water).

Additionally, the standard is now performance-based, including requirements for many performance properties not mentioned in the 2004 version.

For example, composition requirements for Nonvolatile Vehicle and Total Solids by Volume have been removed, and corrosion resistance and humidity resistance requirements have been added, replacing criteria for B 117 salt spray resistance. Wet abrasion resistance has been removed, and sag resistance is now measured per D4400 not D2801, the association notes.

SSPC-Guide 12

SSPC-Guide 12, “Guide to Illumination of Industrial Coatings Projects,” provides facility owners, specifiers, designers and contractors with recommendations on types of lighting and illumination levels for areas where industrial coating operations are taking place.

It contains descriptions of various types of lighting necessary when specific hazards and operating conditions are present, as well as recommendations for illumination levels when performing specific tasks such as surface preparation, coating application and inspection.

The guide also includes recommendations for levels of illumination in general work areas and in project staging areas, where physical risks such as trip hazards or large moving equipment exist.

The principal substantive 2016 revisions are the result of withdrawal of ANSI/IES RP 7, Practice for Industrial Lighting. This standard was the source for the recommendations in tables in the guide.

Because no direct replacement for ANSI/IES RP 7 exists, the reference has been deleted and replaced with a reference to the State of Illinois Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, 2012.

A new category (Project Staging Areas [large objects, trip/fall hazards, operating or moving support equipment]) has been added based on committee recommendations as well.

Among other changes, S.I. units (lux) have been added to the tables, with a note that the S.I. and U.S. Custom units are not exact conversions.

Where to Find Them

These two newly revised publications, along with all other SSPC standards, guides and technical reports, are available online through the SSPC Marketplace.
