At least two people were killed and several others injured after a multi-story residential building under construction collapsed early Wednesday (Oct. 5) afternoon in Bengaluru, India, raising questions about the quality of construction materials used, reports said.

Authorities were working throughout the day to rescue and recover others still believed to be trapped beneath the debris, Bengaluru police told reporters.

Parts of the building reportedly fell on an adjacent apartment building security guard post, which killed a security guard inside, at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time. Eight people were pulled from the collapse site, including the 8-year-old son of the security guard. Two others suffered serious injuries, while six were treated with minor wounds. The victims were not identified.

At least one local report also said that a stray dog was killed in the collapse.

“The building shook and collapsed, we were pulled out by people nearby,” a tile worker told the Times of India.

Materials, Methods Eyed

An official cause of the collapse was not available by Wednesday afternoon.

Many reports and social media posts indicate poor quality construction materials and methods may be to blame.

Local media has not identified the builder or owner responsible for the project; however, they indicate the team had only received approval to build a three-story building, but a five-story structure was being built at the site.

The Mayor G. Padmavati told The Hindu that it seemed like the building officials were “hand in glove with the owner” and so allowed for the extra floors to be constructed. He noted that action would be taken against those officials responsible.

The tragedy occurred in Bengaluru’s Bellandur area.
