A U.K.-based packaging startup is looking for paint companies to partner with it to test a new sustainable flexible packaging concept.

Aquapak Polymers Limited, founded in 2011 and based in Birmingham, is in the process of developing packaging prototypes based on a single-layered flexible pouch with the barrier and anti-static properties necessary for paint, coating and adhesive packaging. The material used is 100 percent recyclable and fully biodegradable, according to the company.

Packaging to a Greening Industry

“Much of the progress in greening the paint and coatings sector has been in reducing the environmental impact of paint at the point of production, and on establishing infrastructure to optimize the recovery and reuse of leftover or waste paint,” notes Aquapak managing director Mike Everard. “And yet the scale of packaging waste generated by the sector is huge.”

Aquapak, which has developed packaging soluations for food waste collection and health-care industry waste collection, is looking for coatings manufacturers to partner with it to develop lightweight paint packaging.

Aquapak, which is anticipating the opening of a 52,000-square foot manufacturing facility in Birmingham next year, is seeking coatings manufacturers to partner with it to develop and implement the paints and coatings packaging, which it says will be lighter and take up less space than traditional buckets.

Aquapak has also developed packaging solutions for food waste collection and health-care industry waste collection.

“Paint manufacturers have, to date, been limited in ways to reduce the environmental impact of packaging,” Everard says. “We believe that providing packaging that offers a circular, end of life solution could be a significant step forward in improving sustainability in the paints and coatings sector.”

Paint manufacturers interesting in taking part in commercial trials of the packaging are asked to contact Everard by phone at +44 121 451 2255 or via email at
