A versatile, high-performance polysiloxane coating touted as offering enhanced durability and aesthetics, as well as cost savings, has been introduced by Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings (Cleveland).
Sher-Loxane 800 was designed to provide a high-gloss finish to bridges, water tanks, structural steel and many other steel surfaces in highly corrosive environments in just two coats, according to the coatings maker.
Labor, Product Cost Benefits
Whether applied as a single coat or in combination with a primer, the coating has the potential to save applicators time and money by eliminating one step of the coating system, Sherwin-Williams says, as well as a faster return to service.

A single coat of the product takes the place of an epoxy and polyurethane topcoat system, the company explains, while a two-coat system of the coating over a zinc primer replaces traditional three-coat systems using zinc primers, epoxies and polyurethanes.
The high-solids, high-gloss polysiloxane’s long-term durability also reduces costs by extending maintenance intervals, according to the company.
“We expect users to experience significant efficiencies related to fewer coats and labor hours; less waste compared to traditional zinc, epoxy, and urethane systems; and extended coating life cycles and maintenance intervals,” explains says Product Manager Danica Zeise.
Performance Properties
The company boasts that its new coating offers long-term color and gloss retention, as well as excellent corrosion and chemical resistance said to rival that of conventional three-coat systems. It also features excellent adhesion properties and high abrasion resistance, it adds.
Additionally, “Sher-Loxane 800 is formulated without isocyanates, and has less than 100 g/l VOC, so it meets stringent environmental regulations,” says Zeise.
The product is said to be compatible with prepared steel, primed substrates and previously coated surfaces. It can be applied by spray, brush or roller without thinning, the company explains, giving users options to match application methods with working conditions.
In addition to the structures mentioned above, the company recommends the high-performance coating for use in a wide variety of markets and applications, including architectural structures, ships, offshore platforms, piping, roller coasters, heavy equipment and more.
