A new ingredient for degreasers and outdoor cleaning products has been developed by AkzoNobel (Amsterdam, Netherlands) for both consumer and commercial applications that involve direct release (bypassing sewage treatment), according to the company.

Developed by the company's Surface Chemistry business, Berol DR-B1 was designed to meet stringent U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) environmental standards without compromising on performance, it says.

Developed by AkzoNobel’s Surface Chemistry business, Berol DR-B1 is a new surfactant suitable for both consumer and commercial applications that involve direct release (bypassing sewage treatment).

The coatings and chemicals manufacturer suggests that its surfactant is suitable for a wide range of outdoor applications where very low environmental impact is a priority, such as the cleaning of mass transit vehicles such as trains and buses, car washes and exterior house cleaning.

"As our cities become more populated, we have to ensure that they remain inspiring and comfortable places to live and work," says AB Ghosh, managing director of the Surface Chemistry business. "We therefore have a responsibility to make them as safe and healthy as possible by reducing the added stress that extra cleaning puts on our environment."

According to Ghosh, degreasers prepared with the product exhibit “quick break behavior,” meaning that, during washing, the oil separates rapidly from the used cleaning solution, enabling its removal and allowing for the safe disposal of the remaining water.
