Cement makers in North America now have access to the C-ADD line of additives from global coatings and adhesives manufacturer MAPEI.

The C-ADD line includes MA.G.A. and MA.P.E. (both grinding aids), Cr(VI) Reduction (a reducing additive) and D-Dust, a dust control technology.

D-Dust (not pictured) is a filming agent that can protect cement at the plant from external dust deposits and, at the same time, protect the cement itself from blowing into the surrounding environment.

MAPEI founded its C-ADD line in 2001 with its initial grinding-aid products; the grinding aids are marketed to cement production plants, to improve cement quality.

Reducing Agent, Dust Control

Cr(VI) Reduction is an antimony trioxide product aimed at reducing hexavalent chromium released in cement production; because antimony trioxide itself is viewed as dangerous to inhale, Cr(VI) encapsulates the particles in a soluble polymer that reduces the inhalation risk.

D-Dust is a filming agent that can protect cement at the plant from external dust deposits and, at the same time, protect the cement itself from blowing into the surrounding environment.

Production of cement additives in the U.S. began last year at MAPEI’s Illinois and Texas facilities, and the company anticipates adding a New Jersey facility to the list of C-ADD factories later in 2016.

Sustainability

Mapei says the additives promote sustainability in multiple ways. The use of the additives reduces the energy needed in the grinding process, and reduces wear on grinding equipment. The company also says the strengthening additives help achieve cement with lower clinker content, and as a result, lower CO2 emissions.
