Partners Reveal New Paint Recycling Tech

Closing the paint production loop and improving how paint is recycled are goals of an ongoing initiative led by global paint manufacturer AkzoNobel, design and innovation firm Seymourpowell and recycled paint maker Newlife Paints.

And, according to Seymourpowell, the partners are making significant progress.

The firm recently reported that it had discovered a new technology to allow for paint to be recycled quickly and cost-effectively. Currently, paint recycling in the U.K. is labor intensive, as the leftover and unused product is manually scrapped out of containers.

Seymourpowell said it was charged with creating machinery and technology to overcome technical and commercial challenges associated with scaling up the paint recycling process to make it mainstream.

Paint Vacuum

After testing several unsuccessful and sometimes costly methods, Seymourpowell said it found a large and powerful industrial vacuum that could suck the leftover paint out of the containers quickly and effectively.

The team developed and adapted the suction technology to make it more suitable for paint recycling and created a large prototype to extract unused paint on an industrial scale. The concept was then trialed with waste management company Veolia, a company that plans to recycle paint commercially.

Specifically, the trial showed that the concept allows paint to be recycled four times faster and at one-seventh of the cost of the previous methods, according to the firm. The technology also leaves the containers clean enough to be recycled themselves.

“Redesigning the way paint gets recycled is fraught with challenges, but Seymourpowell managed to combine creativity with technical ingenuity to create a really effective new solution,” said David Cornish, AkzoNobel Resource Efficiency Manager. “This is certainly helping turn our circular economy strategy into a reality.”

Over 400 million liters of paint gets sold in the U.K. each year but 13 percent, or 55 million liters, goes unused, Seymourpowell notes.
