Nine workers were killed after a 13-story residential building under construction partially collapsed Friday (July 29) morning in Pune, India, reports said.

Authorities said eight of the workers were killed instantly around 10:30 a.m. local time, when a cement slab they were working on caved in from building’s top floor. Those workers’ bodies were recovered by a team of rescuers.

The ninth worker reportedly died on the way to a local hospital. Two others were being treated at a nearby hospital for injuries, reports related. The victims were not identified.

An official cause of the collapse was not available by Friday afternoon.

Permit Eyed

Following the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Police B. Teli told local media outlets that officials had opened an investigation into Pride Purple Construction, the builder responsible for the residential project known has Park Xpress.

He said authorities would determine whether the workers were equipped with safety harnesses while working at that height and why a safety net was not erected below, The Hindu reported.

The city’s municipal commissioner said that the accident was a case of “illicit construction,” accusing the builder of violating norms by allegedly constructing an additional story when it only had permission to build 12.

In the wake of the tragedy, the mayor of Pune said the city would consider “ordering an inspection of all such construction sites to ascertain whether they are ensuring adequate safety measures for their workers.”

A similar incident occurred in December 2012 in nearby Wagholi. There, a slab of an under-construction building caved in killing 13 workers, The Hindu reported.

Less than a week ago, two workers perished when a building under construction collapsed in Hyderabad, India.
