Methylene chloride, a toxic chemical present in some paint strippers, is the topic of a new hazard alert bulletin available from the nonprofit CPWR: The Center for Construction Research and Training.

Methylene chloride, if used without proper ventilation, can quickly to problems including brain damage, heart problems and even sudden death. The new document from CPWR is meant to alert and remind workers of the dangers of working around MeCl, and suggest ways to mitigate the danger.

The hazard alert is a one-page flier briefly explaining the dangers of MeCl, the products it shows up in, and ways to deal with it, from proper protection and ventilation to avoiding the material completely. It is available as a free PDF download or as a hard copy, water-resistant pocket brochure, supplied by CPWR upon request.

The hazard alert explains the dangers of MeCl and proper protection, including supplied-air respirators.

CPWR suggests the hazard alert document be used by safety reps and project foremen to explain the dangers of MeCl on the job; the document, which includes information on OSHA regulations regarding the chemical, can also be used by workers who feel they need to bring MeCl dangers to the attention of their supervisors.
