High resistance to rain erosion is the advantage of a new coating for wind-energy rotor blades, according to manufacturer BASF.

According to BASF, Relest passed a 50-hour rain test, showing its resistance against the high-speed rain and other weathering that wind rotors face.

Relest Wind LEP S is a newly launched coating system for the wind industry, comprising a gel coat, a filler, an edge protection and a topcoat, the German-based company says. The system is touted as protecting wind rotors from weather-related erosion, and BASF says it has been through stringent rain testing.

Rain Tested

According to BASF, Relest passed a 50-hour rain test at “a renowned institute from Denmark,” showing its resistance against the high-speed rain and other weathering that wind rotors face.

Relest’s durability helps protect rotors from damage and can help reduce maintenance costs, according to the manufacturer, and is characterized by a low film thickness.

The Relest system is based on solvent-free, two-component polyurethane compounds, the company notes, and is VOC-regulation-compliant. Relest is part of BASF’s larger wind-rotor portfolio, which includes resins for blade construction and core materials in addition to coatings.
