The Sherwin-Williams Company has announced its 2017 color forecast, Colormix 2017, touting forthcoming trends like “noir,” “holistic” and “intrepid” for residential and commercial spaces.

The Cleveland-based paint maker announced the style predictor for architects, specifiers and designers on June 13.

Each of the four trends it identifies comes with a set of 10 colors, selected through the company’s ColorSnap selection system.

Holistic room

The “holistic” trend, according to Sherwin-Williams, stems from the “pursuit of an elusive ideal: a fair luxury.”

The color trends were put together by Sherwin-Williams’ color and design team, led by Sue Wadden, director of color marketing. The overarching trends: color variety, earth tones and boho chic styling.

Four Palettes

The first trend, “noir,” features dark and earthy tones, “driven by baroque and romanticism trends, a renewed interest in faith and spirit and celebration of the night,” according to the company. “The Dutch painting masters knew the secret—dark hues set a dramatic stage for sensuous luster,” says Wadden.

The “holistic” trend, according to Sherwin-Williams, stems from the “pursuit of an elusive ideal: a fair luxury.” The tones are described as “arctic neutrals, blush rose and wild browns.”

Noir room

The first trend, “noir,” features dark and earthy tones.

The “intrepid” palette consists of bold colors, muted versions of several primaries. “Identity has never been more fluid,” the manufacturer explains, connecting the colors with millennial trends and concepts. “This palette has amazing versatility, which allows for a modern, bright light or a 1970s vibe of smoked glass, bright brass and geometric patterns,” says Wadden.

“Unbounded” is the name of the final palette indicated; the company connects the colors, bright but with an earthy tinge, to global immigration and “global consciousness.”

“Audacious colors in combination with a confluence of foreign patterns and exotic textures can create a look that is striking and entirely new,” Wadden explains.
