We’re used to works of art created with paint brushes, but a record-breaking mosaic unveiled this week in Charlotte, NC, is actually constructed of paint brushes—33,000 of them, to be exact.

The mosaic measures 332 square feet, according to Guinness World Records, and PPG says it took 33,000 brushes and 150 gallons of stain to create.

The Guinness record project was undertaken by PPG and Lowe’s to promote PPG’s Olympic Maximum brand of stain; the artwork-in-progress toured Lowe’s store locations around the Midwest and East Coast, and customers helped to create it.

150 Gallons of Stain

The mosaic measures 332 square feet, according to Guinness World Records, and PPG says it took 150 gallons of stain to create. It depicts a pair of Adirondack chairs on a deck, facing toward a colorful sunset.

Customer adding a brush to the mosaic

Lowe’s customers were encouraged to dip a paint brush in the stain, sign the brush, and put it in its place on the mosaic background.

During the monthlong mosaic tour, Lowe’s customers were encouraged to dip a paint brush in the stain, sign the brush, and put it in its place on the mosaic background. The tour route went from Indianapolis to Charlotte, with stops in cities in Ohio, Tennessee and Kentucky in addition to other sites in Indiana and North Carolina.

The unveiling took place June 6.

Other Paint Records

Guinness has a previous paint brush mosaic on record at 279 square feet, but that mosaic was created with unpainted brushes. That record was achieved in 2009 by Albanian artist Saimir Strati, who toured Albania that year, creating the giant mosaic of Michael Jackson.

For the Olympic mosaic, Guinness used a separate category, “Largest Paint Brush Mosaic Using Paint.”

Other paint-related Guinness records include: Largest Paint Swatch (82 square feet, Lahore, Pakistan, 2012); Most Layers in a Ball of Paint (17,994 layers, on a baseball owned by an Indiana man); and Largest 3-D Painting (the Karelia Business Hotel, St. Petersburg, Russia, 2013).
