An independent supplier of advanced repairs, coatings and replacement parts for gas turbine engine components has opened a new technologically advanced coating line in its Tilburg, Netherlands, facility.

Chromalloy, based in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, announced June 2 that this major investment into expanding its component manufacturing support and repair capabilities in Europe will help it to better serve customers’ manufacturing, production and repair needs in the region.

Chromalloy announced it had completed expansion of its Tilburg, Netherlands, facility, which included installation of a new A-12 coating line.

The new coating line in the 125,000-square-foot Tilburg facility will provide the area’s gas turbine engine manufacturers and operators with the company’s A-12 aluminum diffusion coating for steel and other turbine components, said company President Carlo Luzzatto.

Protecting Components

“When applied to metal components during manufacturing and repair the A-12 protective coating inhibits corrosion and oxidation, effectively extending the life of the components and lowering operators’ maintenance costs,” Luzzatto explained.

According to the company, the A-12 protective coating is applied at low temperatures by a pack cementation process. This is meant to preserve the base alloy properties of gas turbine engine components that range in size from smaller compressor blades and vanes to cases and large buckets found in land-based industrial gas turbines and aero-derivatives.

The semi-automated coating line is reported to be REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and restriction of Chemicals) compliant, meeting all European environmental compliance standards for manufacturing operations.

Additional Enhancements, Capabilities

Besides the new A-12 coating line, Chromalloy has added complementary new component machining capabilities at its Tilburg gas turbine engine center.

The new coating line in the 125,000-square-foot Tilburg facility will provide the area’s gas turbine engine manufacturers and operators with the company’s A-12 aluminum diffusion coating for steel and other turbine components.

The site is now equipped to provide detail machining after coating applications on all sizes of turbine components, it said. New machining capabilities include laser drilling and Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) for components up to and including those in the largest land-based turbines.

In addition to providing OEM new production support and certified component repairs, the Tilburg center also provides other proprietary protective coatings; engineering services; joining technologies including brazing, welding and heat treatment; thermal processing; and advanced inspection.

A new galvanic line was added at this site in 2014 for cleaning operations performed before, during and after component manufacturing, repair and nickel plating.
