Residential construction was on the uptick in the U.S. in 2015, bringing numbers in the windows and doors industry up with it, according to a new report from the American Architectural Manufacturers Association.

The AAMA’s 2015/2016 Study of the U.S. Market for Windows, Doors and Skylights looks at trends in new construction as well as remodeling and window and door replacement. The study examines numbers in both residential and nonresidential markets.

Residential and Nonresidential

The residential segment is the brightest point in the AAMA report: New construction of single-family homes grew 10 percent in 2015 from the prior year's numbers, and multi-family home construction grew 12 percent. That’s faster growth overall compared with 2014, the group says, when multi-family construction was up 14 percent, but single-family construction was only up 4 percent.

According to the report, residential skylights were up slightly in 2015, with healthier growth in the new construction market than the remodel market.

Nonresidential construction was actually down 5 percent in 2015, according to the AAMA report, with slight declines in each related segment (manufacturing/warehouses, stores/mercantile building, office buildings/hotels/institutional).

But, the group notes, the most useful metric for making predictions about what’s coming down the pike isn’t actual construction, but contract awards, which were up 15 percent in 2015.

Windows, Skylights and Doors

In terms of specific products, AAMA says the demand for windows in new residential construction was up 6 percent in 2015, and the group predicts double-digit growth in that market in the coming years. Residential skylights were up slightly (2 percent), with healthier growth in the new construction market (up 8 percent) than the remodeling market (up 1 percent).

Demand for entry doors was up 5 percent versus 2014, the report says, and AAMA predicts steady growth in that market in the coming year.
