PPG Bows Waterborne Intumescents

PPG (Pittsburgh, PA) has announced new products in the Steelguard range of intumescent fire protection coatings for steel structures.

The coatings provide up to 120 minutes of fire protection at temperatures ranging from 350 degrees Celsius (660 degrees Fahrenheit) to 750 C (1380 F).

Steelguard 601 and Steelguard 651 are waterborne, thin-film intumescent coatings designed to minimize environmental impact and deliver up to 120 minutes of cellulosic fire protection.

Made to Protect

These coatings are intended to deliver fire and corrosion protection for modern buildings, where structural steel demands high performance from a protective coating system, according to the company’s Protective & Marine Coatings business unit.

The coatings are designed to expand at high temperatures, from a very thin, lightweight film into a thick foam-like layer that forms an insulation char protecting the steel from cellulosic fire.

PPG notes that the coatings have a high volume of solids, very low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and low odor.
