News Team Puts Coatings to the Test

Friday, May 13, 2016

Truck owners are known to take advantage of protective coatings to safeguard the beds of their vehicles against damage from the loads they haul.

These spray-on coatings are touted for their protective properties when it comes to resisting scratches, rust and chemicals. Beyond use as bedliners and on bumpers and fenders, the coatings have also found a role in industrial and defense settings—even for blast mitigation on military and private vehicles.

Commonly known as spray-on bedliners, these durable protective coatings have found a place in a number of commercial, industrial and military applications.

But just how far does this protection really go?

Putting Coatings to the Drop Test

Staff at the New York Daily News recently put one brand of spray-on protective coating to the test, seeking to find just how “indestructible” the coatings really are, they said.

The news crew may have taken a cue from the "Bedlam Proof Bedliner" segment of the Mythbusters television series, in which the team team tested spray-on bedliners in a variety of scenarios.

In that episode, the Mythbusters testers applied the coating to a jacket that ultimately protected the wearer from dog bites, tested it in car crash simulations, and even explored whether it would help a simple structure withstand the force of a blast.

The Daily News staff, however, kept it much simpler—applying the spray-on polyurea coating to light bulbs, eggs and even the ubiquitous red Solo cup—but still earned a lesson in the true durability of protective coating products in the process.

Staff at the New York Daily News recently did some in-studio testing to find just how “indestructible” spray-on protective coatings really are.
