Coating Offers Durability, Aesthetics

A new polyaspartic coating with antimicrobial properties has been developed specifically for tanks in the food and beverage industry.

Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings (Cleveland) announced its launch of EnviroLastic 8350 on Tuesday (May 10).

This fast-drying, high solids polyaspartic urethane coating was formulated to resist film attack by mold, fungus and mildew on storage tank exteriors used in wineries, alcohol distilleries and other food and beverage production facilities.

EnviroLastic 8350, from Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings, is said to resist film attack by mold, fungus and mildew on storage tank exteriors used in wine, alcohol, and other food and beverage production facilities.

The coating’s resistance to microbial and fouling surface penetration allows for superficial dirt or matter to be steam cleaned or washed away from the tank without the need for harsh chemicals, the company claims. However, it also boasts chemical-resistant properties, it adds, should aggressive detergents and disinfectants be required.

Its chemical resistance extends to alcohol-based fumes, including ethanol and wine alcohol, according to the manufacturer, as well as hot oils and grease. Moreover, it is said to be resistant to color change from exposure to sunlight.

“We understand that image and first impressions are important, especially in the food and beverage industry,” said Rebecca Dolton, the company’s food and beverage market director. “EnviroLastic 8350 was created to provide asset owners with a specialized coating to keep their tanks always looking freshly painted.”

The new polyaspartic can be used as a maintenance coating over existing foam- and urethane-insulated wine storage tanks, Sherwin-Williams notes, as well as adjacent exposed exterior wine substrates. It is suitable for use in USDA-inspected and Canadian food processing facilities, the company adds.

With a dry-to-touch time of 45 to 55 minutes, the coating inhibits dirt pickup during application, the company notes, while its low temperature cure of 35 degrees Fahrenheit (1.6 degrees Celsius) also reportedly helps to eliminate application issues from dirt pickup. A full cure can be achieved within a day, according to the company.

The coating can be applied via plural component heated spray equipment in ambient temperatures as low as 35 degrees Fahrenheit (1.6 degrees Celsius) and as high as 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius), Sherwin-Williams says.
