Eight contractors implicated in a blacklisting scheme in the U.K. will pay a total of £75 million (about $108.2 million) in compensation and legal fees, according to media reports.

The last settlement associated with the case was announced Monday (May 9) by Unite, the UK’s largest labor union. That case involved 256 workers, and a payout of more than £10 million ($14.4 million).

The eight firms will pay about £50 million in compensation and £25 million additional in legal fees.

Unite says that individual payouts could range between £25,000 and £200,000.

Previous Payouts

Previous settlements related to the matter were brought about by construction union UCATT (£8.9 million for 156 workers), union GMB (£5.4 million for 116 workers), and Guney, Clark and Ryan—a law firm representing 167 workers (£6.6 million), according to reports.

The contractors that settled are: Carillion, Balfour Beatty, Constain, Kier, Laing O’Rourke, Sir Robert McAlpine, Skanska UK and Vinci.

Kept from Working

The scandal revolves around the allegation that major U.K. construction firms kept and shared a “blacklist” of laborers who shouldn’t be given work. Unions said many of those targeted on the list were labor, environmental or safety activists.

More than 3,000 names were on the list, kept by an entity called The Consulting Group and shared with more than 30 contractors. The list was revealed in 2009; GMB alleges the blacklisting activities went on for 30 years.

GMB estimates the eight firms will pay about £50 million in compensation and £25 million additional in legal fees from the series of suits. Those amounts do not count compensation that some workers took directly from the firms in lieu of taking part in the court cases.
