Michelman Inc. has announced the availability of its waterborne binder designed for use in the formulation of intumescent coatings that protect structural and architectural steel.

ProHere V 30290 is described as a new polymeric binder that features specific adhesion to steel and metallic surfaces and is applicable in high thickness.

Michelman says its new polymeric binder can be formulated into intumescent coatings that meet fire resistance classifications of up to 90 minutes.

It can be formulated into intumescent coatings that meet fire resistance classifications of up to 90 minutes, the Cincinnati-based company says.

Boasting superior compact and stable foaming properties, the binder is said to reduce demand for a coalescing agent in the formulation, resulting in a lower VOC coating.

Its long open time and ease of workability make it suitable for either factory or on-site application, Michelman adds.

ProHere V 30290 is part of the company’s ProHere line of waterborne polymer dispersions and emulsions specifically developed for use in metal coatings. The line encompasses both polymeric binders for coating formulations as well as lubricants and anti-scratch additives for metal processing and in-use lubricants.

Founded in 1949, Michelman develops water-based barrier and functional coatings, surface modifiers, additives and polymers for various industries.
