Industry giant PPG announced last week that it has made a $2 million expansion to its aerospace coatings facility in Shildon, England.

PPG says the Shildon facility has added two new paint spray booths, bolstering the company’s ability to color-match for customers of its aerospace and military coatings. Also part of the expansion are a new testing lab and new sanding, drying and oven rooms.

The Shildon facility has added two new paint spray booths, bolstering the company’s ability to color-match for customers.

Climate Controlled Booths

The two booths are central to the upgrade, PPG says. One allows for variable temperature and humidity settings so that developers can apply products under different environmental conditions.

“These new capabilities enable us to simulate different environmental conditions that could be encountered by our customers anywhere in the world—from Dubai, where summers are hot and dry, to humid Singapore and even Russia, where a maintenance and repair operation might apply our products in damp, cold conditions,” said PPG technical manager Peter Wind. “As we develop coatings that have new characteristics, we will be able to streamline their launch.”

The second spray booth has a dedicated color-mixing area, to help during the process of color-matching for customers.

“With color being used more in airline liveries and on business aircraft, PPG customers will be able to see more precisely how we can make their vision a reality,” Wind said.

Two-Story Expansion

All in all, the expansion is 3,400 square feet spread over two stories, according to PPG.

The Shildon facility, opened in 1967, serves as a manufacturing, research and technology center for coatings and sealants for aerospace and military use, as well as an application support center for customers. It’s one of six coatings-and-sealants manufacturing locations worldwide for PPG Aerospace, according to the company’s website.

Shildon is located in County Durham, in northeastern England.

PPG, headquartered in Pittsburgh, is the largest coatings manufacturer in the world.
